barney goes berserk - steiff bears destroyed

Last week, a six year old Doberman pinscher named Barney “went berserk” according to authorities and destroyed a collection of hundreds of rare and antique teddy bears.  The collection, which was being displayed at a children’s museum in Wells, England, was worth over $900,000.

Among the bears destroyed was one that had belonged to the King himself, Elvis Presley.  Mabel, a bear made by the German company Steiff in 1909, had belonged to Elvis in his youth and was on loan to the museum from Benjamin Slade.  Mr. Slade had purchased the bear at an auction in Memphis, Tennessee.

DUMB MIKEY

A volunteer at the United Way in Arlington noticed recently that Mikey, with all his wealth, had not made any contributions. The volunteer thought, with all this money, he surely would want to donate something.  So he calls Mikey up and says, “according to our research, you haven’t made a contribution to the United Way, would you like to do so?  Mikey responds, "A contribution? Does your research show that I have an invalid mother who requires expensive surgery once a year just to stay alive?"

record auction price renaissance revival bed - victorian era

A spectacular Victorian-era carved Renaissance Revival rosewood bed made in the mid 1800’s sold for $9,900 at an auction in Roanoke, Alabama.  The bed, believed to have been carved by Thomas Brooks stood about 5.5’ high and about 8’ wide, and featured cherubs on the headboard.

The Thomas Brooks & Company Furniture and Upholsterers Warehouse, was located on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York in the late 19th Century and was one of the premier cabinet makers of the time.  Their work is well documented and is found in a lot of museums. Signed pieces from Thomas Brooks are rare.

The bed was sold to a phone bidder from Houston at the Grand View Antiques and Auctions. The winner was also was lucky enough to purchase a companion piece, a marble-top, deep well dresser also attributed to Thomas Brooks for about $4,400.  A third piece, a marble top half commode was sold to a different bidder for about $2,200.

history of capodimonte porcelain

Lillian B. Gottschalk, the antiques toy collector, aficionado and author has died at the age of 84.  Mrs. Gottschalk was originally inspired to collect toys by her husband Bill, who himself collected vintage cars.  Starting one day with a cast iron car, over the years, she had amassed a collection of hundreds of toy cars.  She collected all forms, from cast iron to tin and wood. Her collection was once housed in their barn in Parkton, Maryland.

In 1985, Mrs. Gottschalk wrote a comprehensive and well documented book titled, “American Toy Cars and Trucks.”  The book is filled with hundreds of photos by Bill Holland.  After her husband died of cancer, the family decided to sell the collection. In a two day sale in New Hope, Pennsylvania, the more than 715 lots brought in more than $1.5 million.

Sean Chandler West has moved some of his inventory to new digs in D.C.  The Chandler Collection can now be seen at Distinctive Lifestyles, on 18th Street in the downtown area.  The shop, which is better known for their expertise in book restoration, binding and making well loved, personal leather items look new again, claim the White House and the Department of Justice as customers. In an attempt to add color to their shop, they have invited Sean to display some of his wares at their shop.
